On 15 and 16 November, Estonia’s Consulate General in San Francisco hosted the annual meeting of Estonia’s honorary consuls in the United States. The main guest of the event was Estonian Ambassador to the United States Kristjan Prikk.
The honorary consuls were given an overview of the main recent developments in Estonia, upcoming major events, recent topics in consular affairs and the activities of the Estonian Investment Agency of Enterprise Estonia in the United States.
Honorary consuls provided information on developments in their consular areas and presented ideas about possible future steps for promoting Estonia. The joint discussion concentrated on boosting cooperation between the network of honorary consuls and Estonia’s diplomatic missions. In addition to the working sessions, the programme also included a visit to a modular house by Estonian company Harmet and a meeting at Stanford University to get an overview of the programme of Baltic studies and cooperation between the Estonian Foreign Ministry and Stanford University.
On 15 November, Estonian Ambassador to the United States Kristjan Prikk and Consul General in San Francisco Ann Hänni held a reception for their colleagues and partners on the West Coast, Estonia’s honorary consuls in the United States and representatives of the Estonian community.
“This is the first major event in Estonia’s San Francisco Consulate General to express gratitude and recognise our partners on the ground for their consistent and substantial support for the launch of Estonia’s consulate general, which was greatly affected by the outbreak of the COVID pandemic,” Consul General Ann Hänni said. “We are planning to organise a visit from Estonia with a high-level business delegation as soon as the situation on the ground allows.”
Two Estonia’s honorary consuls were honored with awards of the Foreign Minister at the reception. Estonia’s former honorary consul in San Francisco Richard Allan Horning, whose mandate for representing Estonia in the region ended with the launch of Estonia’s diplomatic mission in San Francisco in late 2019, was thanked formally. Estonia’s honorary consul in Los Angeles Jaak Treiman was presented with a silver badge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for his extraordinary and dedicated service.
Preparations for establishing the Consulate General in San Francisco began in late 2019. The region of the Consulate General includes 13 western US states and its main tasks include advancing business ties between Estonia and the US West Coast and providing consular services. The staff of the consulate general also includes a representative of the Estonian Investment Agency of Enterprise Estonia. Estonia currently has 13 honorary consuls in the United States.
